Friday May 9th was Mother's Day Sprint Battle at I-96 Speedway. The grandstands and parking lot were full of dirt track racing fans for the 2nd stop of the season at I-96 Speedway for Sprint car racing. Support classes were Hubbco Racing Product IMCA Mods, Street Stocks, and Sport Compacts. UMP Super Late Models, Pro Stocks, and Mini wedges all had the night off.

We were all eager to see what type of Sprint was going to be the fastest. On hand were the Great Lakes Traditional Sprints which are 410 Non-winged Sprints and the Great Lakes Super Sprints which are 360 Winged Sprints.
Fast time for GLTS was 15.999 by #0 Steve Irwin. Fast time for GLSS was 13.827 by #17 Jared Horstman. So, 360 Winged Sprints win the night.

The GLSS Feature event got off to a tumultuous start after two big rollovers took place before even getting a green flag lap in. But, once we got green, we were able to see non-stop action to the checkered flag. Showing that he wasn't just fast for qualifying and sweeping the night for his races, #17 Jared Horstman would pick up the feature win 2nd-#51 “Big Wheel” Scotty Thiel 3rd- #71H “Mad” Max Stambaugh 4th- #85 “Double D” Dustin Dagget 5th- #38 Chase Ridenour. Heat races were won by Horstman, Thiel, and Stambaugh.

The GLTS Feature was off to a fast and furious start as the drivers were all battling to find the fastest line around the Speedway until settling on being High, Wide, and Handsome on the high side. #41 Ricky Lewis from Camarillo, CA would win from his outside pole starting position 2nd- #86 Keith Sheffer Jr. 3rd-#0 Steve Irwin 4th-#49 Brian Ruhlman 5th-#Max Frank. Heat Races were won by Ruhlman, Lewis, and Sheffer Jr.

The Hubbco Racing Product IMCA Mod Feature event showcased a great class of West Michigan Modified drivers to make it almost impossible to predict the winner. The top 5 would mix it up, swapping positions with sliders and crossovers throughout the race with some veteran wheel men charging their way through the field as Myron Deyoung and Gary Vandermark each improved 7 and 9 positions in the race. The winner improved 5 positions to park it in the Lane Automotive/Allstar Performance Victory Lane. 1st-#12 Jeff Reay 2nd-#7D Myron Deyoung 3rd-#20W “Livewire” AJ Ward 4th-#43A Mark Anderson 5th-#10 Gary Vandermark. Heat races won by Deyoung and Reay.

The Street Stock Feature had a few lead changes between 3 drivers. Pole Sitter David Schmidt battled with outside pole sitter Bill Brandt Jr. swapping the lead between them until eventual winner, Carlind Forsythe, finally got around Brandt to go on to the checkered flag. 1st-#67 Carlind Forsythe 2nd-#65 Bill Brandt Jr. 3rd-#46 David Schmidt. Heat race was won by Schmidt.

The final support class of the evening would be a tale of two emotions. Heavy favorites, Colin Preston and Nick Williams started the feature with each driver trying to become the first 2 time Feature winner in Compacts on the year. Preston started the feature promising before having issues that resulted in a DNF. Williams would hang on to claim victory and his 2nd Feature win of this young race season. 1st-#70 Nick Williams 2nd-#49 Austin Terryn 3rd-#91 Blake Huitema. Heat race was won by Preston.

Join us next week for a classic night of racing with UMP Super Late Models, Hubbco Racing Products IMCA Modifieds, Pro Stocks, Street Stocks, Sport Compacts, and Mini Wedges at I-96 Speedway “Where Excitement Lives!”
