Kris Patterson works high side for victory

Stanton Michigan’s Hall of Fame driver Rick Stout and Spring Lake, Michigan’s Bill Bray would bring the eighteen car field to the green flag at the start of the 25 lap Nesmith Ultimate Champion Late Model feature, Saturday night at I-96 Speedway. Stout would jump into the early lead with Kris Patterson in hot pursuit right behind him. Zach Hanson was on the move making his way up to the eleventh spot from his eighteenth starting spot until lap 7 when Roger Wing spun in turn two.
Back under green flag and Hanson’s advancement would be short lived as he spun on the next circuit to bring out the second caution on lap eight. Scott Ehlert would get a great jump on the restart and dove to the bottom in turn two to try and take the lead away from Stout but was unsuccessful and fell back to the third spot.
Lap ten brought out the red flag as Jeff Sherwood, Scott Fisk, Trever Sloan, and Hanson would all get together in between turns one and two blocking the speedway. Using the high side on the restart one Hall of Famer would pass another as Patterson made the high side work. He would go on to win career feature number 521. Stout, Ehlert, Mike Nugent, Bray, John McClure, Wing, Gary Vandermark, Kris Patterson Jr., and Dan Hubble would round out the top ten. The win for Patterson is the first in the Ultimate Champion division.
Stout, Wing and Patterson won the heats.
For the U.M.P. Modified feature, also on th e1/2 mile track, the “Crab man” Shannon Fisk and Ada, Michigan’s Todd “Mr. Smooth” Feutz would bring the field to the green flag. Feutz would take the lead on the first lap while Mark “The Gas Man” Anderson moved to third from fifth. Jared Guinn and Steve Shellenberger got tangled up in turn one and brought out the caution on the second lap.
On the restart Guinn ended up in the little pond in one and two. Back under green Anderson and Fisk were battling for the second position neither one making a mistake. On lap eleven Guinn would spin in turn four bringing out the third caution.
Anderson would get a great restart and make his way to second, but would not be able to catch Feutz and would come home second followed by Fisk, Travis Stemler, Tim Stemler, Justin Fleming, Ken Beutler, Rich Robinson Jr., Shellenberger; Guinn would make up the top ten. For Feutz, the current point leader, it was win number three so far this year.
In heat race action, it was Feutz and Anderson.
Hillary Smith and Jay Scott would lead the street stock feature to the green flag. Smith would take the early lead as Ronald “The Magic Man” Wiers and Aaron “The Lone” Wolf would begin their charge to the front. Cort Skoog would spin in turn four to bring out the caution on lap six.
On lap eight after another caution, Cody Denny would take the lead away from Smith. Wiers and Wolf would make their way by smith too, and put on a great battle for the lead. With the white flag out Wolf made one last attempt at the lead using the high side. Wolf would cross the line by just a fender in front of Denny, Wiers, A.J. Ward, Smith, Terry Byrne, Ronnie Mathis, Scott, Randy Smith, Skoog, Eric Loveland, and Joel Hummel would make up the rest of the field. Wolf picked up his fourth win of the year. Wolf and Denny battled hard for the heat race wins.
John Primm would take the early lead for the road beaters. Rob Nieman would catch Primm on the second lap. They would battle back and forth for the until lap twelve when Primm would get caught up in an accident and would not be able to return. Nieman would go on to win for the seventh time this year, and continue his dominance in this class. Terry Henderson, Terry Henderson Jr., Steve Wawiernia, John Primm, Scott Rumsey, Ben Faust, and Nikki Primm would make up the field. Primm took the heat win.
Tucker Erwin would lead all twenty laps for the win and third of the year in mini sprint feature. Nick Nelson, Ronald Brown, Collin Erwin, Jason Holibaugh, Jay Steinebach, Al Halbert, Derek Donaldson, and Trevor Stevens would make up the field. Brown was first in the heat race.
Next weekend remember to come out, Saturday night July 18th, for the $2,000 to win 50 lap feature for the Ultimate Champion Late Models and they will go top less. Drivers from several states have been calling and are interested in racing.
Racing on the ½ will also be the UMP mods. The street stocks win continue there great battles on the 3/8 with the road beaters and mini sprints.
Also, Friday night July 17th, the Nesmith Ultimate Champion Powered by GM performance parts late models, will take to the road for their first time away from I-96, and travel to MT. Pleasant Speedway, for a big $1,000 to win special. |
