Today I-96 Speedway is one of the finest weekly racing facilities in the mid-west. Each week the stands are filled with eager fans hearing the sounds of thundering race cars. I-96 provides racing action for speed demons who tune their race cars for speed and fame.

I-96 Speedway is a growing part of the Ionia County with its rich history and steady growth. We think the best is yet to come.

I-96 Speedway History

1971

I-96 Speedway was built by Steve Clarke and the track was named Clarke's Motor Speedway.

Clarkes Motor Speedway named the "the fastest 1/2 mile in michigan"

August 27 1971

August 27 1971 first feature race was won by Paul Weisner, out of Muskegon, MI, using a 6 cylinder Camaro.

First greased pig contest held.

First Chicken throwing contest held.

1972 - 1975

AMA Motorcycle racing added to Speedway.

At this time Clarkes Motor Speedway named the "the fastest 1/2 mile in michigan".

AMA National Dirt Track Champion Scott Parker races at the Speedway.

Jay Springsteen, former AMA National Champion starts career at Clarkes Speedway.

Winged Sprints added to the line of race event types.

Sprint on Dirt (SOD) arrives to the Speedway and is still a venue at I-96 Speedway

1976 - 1978

Clarkes Motor Speedway is bought operated by Duane and Arnie LaCombe, who co-owned Crystal Raceway.

Clarkes Motor Speedway is renamed by the new owners, Mike Landon and Bob Lyons, I-96 Raceway Park.

I-96 Raceway Parke hosts the first modern day weekly sprint car racing.

East coast modifieds make there way to Michigan for the first time.

1982-1986

I-96 Raceway is bought by Carl Miskotten and leases it to the Flinn Brothers who renamed the track Ionia County Raceway

Track becomes the hottest venue for late models, sportsman, street stocks.

Ron Flinn co-owner, operator named MSPA (Michigan Speedway Promoter Association) Promoter of the year.

Craftsman truck driver Johnny Benson races Ionia County Raceway and makes it his regular.

1987 - 1996

First major renovation project by the new owner Mr. E. Thomas Batista.

New grandstands, pit bleachers, pit concession building, restrooms, main concession building, VIP Pavillion, cement walkways and infield scoreboard.

Ionia County Raceway is known as "The Sprint Car Capital of Michigan".

Original outlaw Bobby Allen sets a track record of 16.48.

NASCAR star Kasey Kahne starts his career at Ionia County Raceway.

1997 - 2000

Track becomes dream purchase for race fans Tom and Pat Slager.

Ionia County Raceway is once again renamed "The New 96 Speedway"

IMCA modifieds and Hobby stocks get added to the events venue.

NTPA Tractor Pulls come to The New 96 Speedway

The New 96 Speedway becomes the first host of the World of Outlaw Gumout Series (WoO II or Junior World of Outlaws)

2001 - 2003

Track changes owners and Jeff Chapko, Ionia native, is now the new proud owner of the renamed track Ionia Raceway Park

Amercian Late Model Series is back at Ionia Raceway Park

2004 - Present

Out with the old and In with the I-96 Speedway is back and this time

Mike "The Missle Man" Mouch - Former sprint car driver from Lapeer, Michigan.

In 2004 I-96 Speedway hosted World of outlaws, American Late Model Series, Sprint on Dirt (SOD), Late Models, IMCA Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and 4 cylinder Mini Stocks.

In 2005 I-96 Speedway added a brand new 1/4 mile and Hobby stock and Mini Stock cars was added.

CORR Off-Road racing series makes I-96 Speedway a venue for their series.

I-96 Speedway's first Monster truck show hosted.

I-96 Speedway addes a new 1/8 mile track for motocycle races, quad races and go-karts.

NASCAR Star Kenny Schrader brings his late model to I-96 Speedway and races the 1/2 mile track.

A new walk through concession is added

New Pit Announcement system installed for race commentary.

Fan Car added to I-96 Speedway. Fans can now take a ride around the track in a real 800+hp late model race car.

Gauntlet races, Harley races, go-karts brought to the I-96 Speedway

Companies and Family Parties can now host their events at I-96 Speedway with 4 cylinder race cars to race around the track.

Ionia's frist off road race park is added to I-96 Speedway.
