Lake Odessa, Michigan (Friday January 3rd, 2014): The racing community is sure to notice many changes at the fast 3/8ths (0.375) mile high banked dirt oval of the I-96 Speedway located in Lake Odessa, Michigan. However the most notable one is the switch to Friday nights beginning this year. When the new season starts it will be on a new night.
For the last nine years the speedway has ran on Saturday nights, but after much debate and discussion, the decision was finally made to make switch. However, I-96 Speedway is no stranger to running Friday’s as opposed to Saturdays. In fact when the speedway was purchased by co-owners and promoters Mike & Sarah Mouch in April of 2004, the track was already a Friday night venue. The switch to Saturdays occurred the following year in 2005, and remained that way until now.
The season is set to open on Friday, April 25th with the running of the ninth annual ice-breaker headlined by the premiere racing division for the United Midwestern Promoters (UMP) DIRTcar racing series, the UMP DIRTcar Late Models. They will be joined by the UMP DIRTcar Modifieds, UMP DIRTcar Street Stocks, and UMP DIRTcar Sport Compacts.
The season will consist of a variety of attractions including some big editions such as the Sunoco American Late Model Series (A.L.M.S.) tour which will be on hand on May 23rd. Then on August 22nd for the first time in seven years, the superstars of the World of Outlaws Late Models will invade the speedway for what is sure to be an entertaining show. Plus returning again this summer on Saturday May 31st will be the fire-breathing winged warriors of the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars for their first and only stop in the state of Michigan. Also returning for their annual Sunday show, this year falling on June 22nd will be the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals tour. The Engine Pro Sprints on Dirt will be returning this year as well for two shows, one on May 2nd and the other on August 1st. Finally, the always entertaining Allstar Performance Michigan Dirt Cup Modified tour presented by lane automotive will be will be running two dates with the speedway, one on May 16th, and the season championship race on August 29th.
Along with the stacked schedule, there has also been an addition to the weekly racing line-up with the return of a regular 360 sprint car division who will run for their own points, and track championship. The additions don’t stop there, as speedway officials decided to make the addition for a new Pro Stocks/ Pro Trucks, and a new UMP DIRTcar Pro Modified division running for there own championship as well.
